About Alpacas of Wintercreek
|
We have been active participants in the wonderful world of alpacas since 2003! We jumped in with both feet and have enjoyed every minute of our adventure.In just a few years our herd has grown, our quality has definitely improved and our goals have broadened. Our commitment is in producing superior, award-winning, alpacas with exceptional fiber, and in strengthening the alpaca fiber industry. Our initial investment was average, and in a few short years the return on that investment has been excellent. We are working, one breeding season at a time, to keep improving the overall quality of our herd. Focusing on "uniformity" of fiber characteristics throughout the fleece; including fineness, density, crimp and color; with additional emphasis on strong bone structure (conformation), a calm temperament and excellent overall health and breeding capabilities.

We love the true black huacaya. We have bred multiple generations of black, and improved their fineness and handle appreciably. All of our black huacaya are very competitive in the show ring. Their true black fiber is highly sought after by many fiber artists.However, in our quest to breed the perfect true black, we find ourselves delivering beautiful silver and brown huacaya, and some exceptional fawn alpacas also! There is even a white girl popping out this year!! We love every color that hits the ground. It is all part of the wonderful world of breeding alpacas!

Lifestyle: We do all of the hands-on care for our alpacas. We enjoy the daily interaction with each alpaca. As we do our daily chores, I watch each alpaca for any changes in their health. We get to know each of our alpacas so we can detect problems early. Each new cria is monitored closely for good weight gain and overall health. Because we have chosen dams with excellent mothering abilities, we rarely have a problem or have a need to intervene. We keep concise health and breeding records and implement a strong quarantine and parasite control program. Fecal testing and appropriate worming is done regularly. Our entire herd has also been tested and is BVDV free.

At Wintercreek we are happy to host various visitors, including retirement groups, day care, school children and play groups. The alpaca is a very generous and curious animal and are always happy to greet visitors, especially if they come bearing treats! Every day is a new experience with our alpacas and we love to share.

We are very enthusiastic about our animals and the alpaca industry, therefore, we believe in full-disclosure regarding the strengths and weaknesses of each individual alpaca. There may not be the perfect alpaca, but we believe there is a perfect alpaca for every person.
